General Description:
This is a part-time instructional assignment in the Noncredit Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Adult Education and Noncredit. The professor could be assigned to teach a variety of English courses. The maximum teaching load is 10 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area and campus professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g., submit grades on time to admissions and records


Typical Qualifications
Required:
Except as provided elsewhere in this article (53412. Minimum Qualifications for Instructors of Noncredit Courses), qualifications for service as a faculty member teaching a noncredit course shall be the same as the minimum qualifications for credit instruction in the appropriate discipline, or as follows:

  • A bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages OR
  • A bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual bicultural studies, reading, or speech AND a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor OR
  • A bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above AND one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution AND a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor OR
  • Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
Preferred:
  • Minimum of one year of experience in teaching English as a Second Language
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.

Interview Information:
Those applicants deemed highly qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee which includes a teaching demonstration on a selected topic. Interviews may be held onsite or via Zoom. Employee Benefits:
Sick leave, faculty employed on a part-time hourly basis shall earn sick leave credit at the rate of one (1) hour for each twenty (20) hours of paid service.
